Wait over as the show begins

MUSCAT — A simple but colourful ceremony, presided over by His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, minister of heritage and culture, marked the begining of the 19th Arabian Gulf Cup 2009 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher yesterday.

Rashad Al Hinai, undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports Affairs, welcomed the guests from all the AGCC nations, Iraq and Yemen, and later chief guest Sayyid Haitham declared the championship open.

Oman’s soccer team captain Mohammed Rabe’ea took the oath on behalf of the participating teams.

The popular names present at the ceremony included Uefa president Michel Platini and AFC president Mohammed bin Hammam. The opening match between Oman and Kuwait in Group A ended in a draw (0-0).

The opening ceremony included performance by the police band, parade of the teams and the raising of the organising committee’s flag.
