Rain: ROP cautions citizens against accidents

MUSCAT — An official source at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) Public Relations Department said yesterday that the rains that fell on Tuesday night in some governorates and regions of the Sultanate had caused road accidents, fire at commercial complexes, disruption of electricity lines, uprooting of trees and signboards and formation of water pools.

The ROP has called upon the citizens and residents to remain cautious and alert, abide by safe speed limit while driving, leave enough space, not to overtake until it is safe, not to cross the wadis and low areas till the water level and its flow allow crossing, and to keep away from the slopes that are liable for wadis’ outflow.

It also called upon fishermen and sea voyagers not to go into the sea unless they have ensured that the weather conditions have improved.

The ROP said it had taken all precautionary measures during the crossing of the trough of low pressure over the Sultanate skies to ensure the safety of the public safety.

Meanwhile, maximum rainfall was registered at rain gauge stations of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources which reached 52ml in the wilayat of Barka in the Batinah region, 50ml in the wilayat of Seeb in Muscat Governorate, 31ml in the wilayat of Khasab in the governorate of Musandam and 10ml in the wilayat of Yanqul in the Al Dhahirah region.

The rainfall led to overflow of Wadi Al Jizzi, and Wadi Souq in the Northern Batinah region and Wadi Al Abya’d in the Southern Batinah region.

Rainfall is expected to continue with possibility of its expansion to include Jabal Al Hajar Al Sharqi range to cover the Sharqiyah, the Dakhiliyah and the Al Wusta regions.

Heavy to light rains fell yesterday in a number of governorates and regions in the Sultanate. Heavy rains coupled with winds and hailstones fell in Falaj Al Qabaiel and Al Multqa’ in the wilayat of Sohar which led to overflow of Wadi Falaj Al Qabaiel and Al Multaqa. Moderate rains coupled with winds and hailstones fell in Majan. Moderate rains also fell in Mala’ha in Wilayat Shinas, Al Wajaja which led to overflow of wadis. Light rains fell in the wilayat of Bukha in the governorate of Musandam and light rains fell in lima in the wilayat of Daba.
