Mahdha wins HM’s Cup in civic contest

MUSCAT — The wilayat of Mahdha in the governorate of Buraimi won the first position in the 24th Municipalities and Water Resources Month Competition for 2008 held under the theme ‘Continuous Efforts and Sustainable Development’.

The wilayat of Sur in the Sharqiyah region won the second rank; the wilayat of Ibri in the Dhahirah region came third; the wilayat of Nizwa in the Dhakhiliyah region came fourth and the wilayat Wadi Bani Khalid in the Sharqiyah region won the fifth rank.

The results were announced yesterday by Sheikh Abdullah bin Salim Al Rowas, minister of regional municipalities and water resources. He pointed out that all the five wilayats won His Majesty’s Cups besides financial prizes.

Other wilayats won the Ministry’s Cups and financial prizes. The wilayat of Liwa came first, the wilayat of Ibra second; the wilayat of Barka third; the wilayat of Sumail fourth; the wilayat of Diba ended in the fifth place.

The wilayats of Suwaiq, Masirah, Rustaq and Mahout secured top ranks in different activities thereby winning the Ministry’s Shield and financial prize.

The wilayat of Bidiyah was honoured by the ministry for its distinguished efforts in the service sector and the wilayat of Al Khabourah for its efforts in organising awareness campaigns.

In his speech, to mark the occasion, the regional municipalities and water resources minister, extended his thanks and gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

“The achievements of the Regional Municipalities and Water Resources Months during the past years of the competition, reflect the civilisation of the Omani society whose principles were derived from the foresight of His Majesty the Sultan, which were based on promoting cooperation and integration,” he said.

“The citizens were so enthusiastic about the new civic services and development projects,” he added.

“In 2007-2008, the competition has witnessed a qualitative shift in the capacity and kind of projects implemented, which met the society’s requirements,” he said. The competition for 2009 will also be conducted under the same theme,” he added.

Specifying the years for some theme-based competitions among regional municipalities was introduced in the late 70s.

The contest was held in 1979. In 1980, Ministerial Decision No. 31/1980 was issued fixing the second week of November of every year as Municipalities’ Competition Week.

To enable the municipalities and citizens to have a constructive cooperation, the Municipalities Week has been widened in 1985 and it has become Municipalities Month.
