Turkish jazz concert on Saturday

MUSCAT — Renowned Turkish jazz composer and pianist Kerem Gorsev will perform here on February 14.

Announcing this at a press conference yesterday, Engin Turker, ambassador of Turkey, said: “Kerem Gorsev is not just a pianist but also a composer. He only performs his own music. At the concert, he will be playing some pieces from his recently released Diversion besides his November in St Petersburg’ albums.”

The concert, called ‘Diversion Project’, by Kerem Gorsev Trio will be held at the Performing Arts Centre at the American British Association (ABA), at 7pm with entry by invitation.

Kerem Gorsev will perform on the piano with Kagan Yildiz on the bass and Ates Tezer on the drums. There will also be a special performance in the afternoon for students of ABA.

The ambassador pointed out that the concert coincides with Valentine’s Day. “We did it that way because music is for lovers. The concert is a gift to young and old lovers. And then, Gorsev’s musical temperament is so romantic,” he said.

The ambassador said such a visit by a prominent musician promotes the arts and culture and further helps to strengthen the good Turkey-Oman relationship. “Music is international. It touches the heart and anyone with an ear for it can enjoy music. It builds bonds,” he said.

Born in Istanbul, Kerem Gorsev began his musical training early. Since 1995, he has released 12 albums of his own compositions. ‘Diversion’ is the latest one, having released in January 2009. Gorsev has performed at various clubs and jazz festivals, including the International Istanbul Jazz Festival and the Vilnius Jazz Festival in Lithuania.

In 2008, Gorsev performed at the 36th Pescara Jazz Festival, the 35th Umbria Jazz Festival and the 18th Akbank Jazz Festival. On December 22, 2008, Gorsev performed his own project ‘November in St Petersburg’ with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in that city.
