3.7pc increase in fixed phone subscribers

MUSCAT — The statistical bulletin issued by the Ministry of National Economy has shown that subscribers of the fixed phone amounted to 270,906 at the end of November 2008 compared to 261,207 at the end of 2007, constituting a 3.7 per cent increase.

The number of fixed telephone line subscribers (post-paid) in the Sultanate amounted to 220,106 at the end of November 2008, compared to 219,128 at the end of 2007. The number of Sahl subscribers amounted to 50,800 at the end of November 2008 compared to 42,079 at the end of 2007.

The number of public phones in the different parts of the Sultanate stood at 6,708 compared to 6,858 in the 2007. The number of fixed telephone line subscribers in Muscat Governorate stood at 136,848 at the end of November 2008, followed by the Al Batinah region (44,102), the Al Dakhiliyah region (25,678), the Al Sharqiyah region (22,643), Dhofar Governorate (21,867), the Al Dhahirah region (15,993), Musandam Governorate (3,424) and the Al Wusta region 351.

The number of subscribers of billed and pre-paid mobile service, provided by Oman Mobile and Nawras, stood at 3,166,382 at the end of November 2008 compared to 2,500,000 at the end of 2007, a 26.7 per cent increase.

The number of subscribers of billed mobile telephone at the end of November 2008 stood at 321,669 compared to 293,622 in 2007 constituting a 9.6 per cent increase.

The number of pre-paid mobile service has shown remarkable increase as the number of subscribers at the end of November 2008, amounted to 2,844,713 compared to 2,206,378 at the end of 2007, a 28.9 per cent rise.

The bulletin added that the number of Internet service subscribers as at the end of November 2008 amounted 55,677, compared to 49,824 at the end of 2007. The number of Power Net subscribers as of November 2008 reached 31,081 compared to 18,984 at the end of 2007.
