Oman, Russia to activate tie-ups in trade, IT, tourism fields

MUSCAT — An official session of talks was held between Oman and Russia at the State Council here yesterday.

The Omani side at the meeting was led by Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh Al Mantheri, chairman of the State Council; while the Russian side was led by Sergey Mironov, chairman of the Federal Council of Russia, who is currently visiting the Sultanate.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mantheri welcomed the guest and the delegation accompanying him to the Sultanate and pointed out that the visit would enhance the existing good relations between the Sultanate and the Russian Federation.

At his welcoming speech, Mantheri said he was looking forward to developing the existing bilateral relations in all walks of life.

He pointed out that his visit to Russia a few years ago and the current visit of the Russian delegation stressed the keenness of officials in both the countries to develop the bilateral relations and make them reach the prospective aspirations.

“The political relations between the Sultanate and Russia are good. The economic relations have witnessed a remarkable development. While there are 10 economic and investment agreements already signed by the two countries, a number of other agreements are in the pipeline,” he added.

Mantheri called upon the joint economic committee between the two countries to expedite activation of the economic cooperation and making the matters more smooth and flexible in investment, tourism, IT and telecommunications fields in the two countries.

On his part, Sergey Mironov said he was delighted to visit the Sultanate and meet the senior Omani officials. He highlighted the keenness of the Russian leadership to develop its relations with the Sultanate in different fields.

In a similar speech, he also said the history of the bilateral relations dates back to hundreds of years ago and pointed out to the mutual visits between Omani and Russian personalities during the 16th century.

“The Russian people hold the Sultanate of Oman and its people in high respect and esteem,” he added.

He also hoped that the economic relations between the two countries would develop further in future.

Sergey Mironov expressed his satisfaction over the talks he had with Mantheri.

In a statement to Oman News Agency, he said he discussed all the bilateral cooperation domains and how to boost them. He also hoped that this visit would give thrust to develop the relations in all areas.

The talks session was attended from the Omani side by Said bin Hilal Al Busaidi, deputy chairman of the State Council; Amer bin Mohammed Al Hajri, deputy chairman of the State Council; Khalid bin Salim Al Saidi, secretary-general of the State Council, a number of members of the State Council and from the Russian side by the accompanying delegation and the Russian ambassador to the Sultanate.
