Liwa, Barka tankers launched in Japan

OITA (Japan) — A ceremony was organised here yesterday in celebration of the launching of Liwa oil products tanker, bringing the total number of Oman Shipping Company’s tankers to 16.

The celebration was held under the auspices of Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy, deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council and chairman of OSC.

Macki, along with officials, toured the various sections of the vessel and was briefed on the equipment and controls of the tanker.

Liwa has a capacity to store 75 tonnes of oil products, a length of 228m, 32m width and a draft’s height of 21m.

Macki said entering Liwa into service was one of the various achievements of the company, which would strengthen the capabilities of the company to meet the requirements of international markets.

In 2011, the company’s fleet of tankers would reach 34, he said, pointing out that OSC tankers were built as per the international criteria in the field.

Meanwhile, OSC also celebrated the launch of Barka LNG tanker on the Takamatu Island as the 15th tanker in the company’s fleet, in the presence of a number of officials of the company.

Barka has a capacity of 153, 000 cubic metres of LNG, a length of 289 metres, 49 metres in width and a draft’s height of 27 metres.
