Award for best governance to be conferred on HM

MUSCAT — A prestigious gold medal and shield will be conferred on His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said for the phenomenal achievements made by the Sultanate.

This was disclosed here yesterday by Zahid Malik, editor-in-chief of Pakistan Observer who is here to cover the 29th AGCC Summit. The award was instituted by the daily Pakistan Observer at the initiative of Abdul Sattar, a former foreign minister of Pakistan, who is now editor (foreign affairs) of the Pakistan Observer, and finalised by a select group of former ambassadors, think-thanks, academia and media personalities to promote good governance and transparency in the Muslim world.

Malik said that the award, instituted in 2003, has earlier been given to three heads of the OIC member states.

The earlier recipients are Abdelaziz Bouteflika, president of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, September 26, 2005; Ilham Aliyev, president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, May 8, 2006; and Nursultan Nazarbaev, president of the Republic of Kazakhstan, March 29, 2007.

Malik said that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said is a dynamic role model whose various people-friendly initiatives are exemplary and worth emulating by other countries.

“Indeed the Sultanate is the best-governed state in the region,” he said. A copy of the decision of the Editorial Board to confer the award on His Majesty the Sultan was handed over yesterday by Zahid Malik to the Omani authorities for onward transmission to His Majesty for his concurrence.
