Muscat the capital of Oman since 1790 has a great deal of charm and character. Muscat offers the combination of the relaxed atmosphere of an Indian Ocean town set amongst the well ordered life of a modern oil state. The original town of Muscat forms but a fraction of the administrative area, also known to non residents as Muscat. Qurm has the principal shopping area in Muscat for major western brands and several beach front hotels and Al Khuwayr is an expanding residential area of Muscat with many government ministry buildings, embassies and is close to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
